Conventional ID books still being issued by Home Affairs

Last year the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) issued more than 680 000 smart ID cards to South African citizens 16 years of age and above, Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba told Parliament.

How many smart ID books were issued?

“During the fourth quarter of the 2015-2016 financial year‚ the DHA issued 683 550 smart ID cards to persons 16 years of age and above.

ID Book Permanent ResidenceThere were 69 903 first-issue identity documents issued within 54 working days and 51 468 re-issued IDs within 47 working days‚” said Minister Gigaba. Continue reading

General Information about South African Identity books

An Identity document is important as it proves your identity in many concerns – when entering into business arrangements, access to housing, education and healthcare services, to register to vote in elections, to apply for passport and visas and much more. The green-bar-coded-Identity-book (ID book) is therefore a legal form of identity when dealing with public and private institutions.

The Identity documents are issued to South African citizens or permanent residence permit holders who are 16 years or older.

Applications can be made at any office of the Department of Home Affairs or any South African mission or consulate overseas. Provide your cellphone number so that you can receive regular updates on the progress of your application. Home affairs take approximately 2 month to process the application. Continue reading
