South Africa pet travel rules and requirements

We would like to provide you herewith with a list of pet travel rules and requirements for a stress free pet import to South Africa.

The Import Permit: Firstly, an Import Permit needs to be issued by an approved vet by Government Veterinarian Authority in the country of origin. This Import Permit must contain a Veterinary Health Certificate for pet export (2 pages for cats and 4 pages for dogs).  If this certificate has not been completed correctly, endorsed by the necessary authority, and/or the original has not arrived with the animal, the animal will be send back to the country of origin.

The Microchip: Each Pet must be identifiable by means of a microchip, hence no other form of identification is acceptable. South Africa currently accepts AVID 9 and AVID 10 in addition to ISO (The International Standards Organization). This microchip can be implanted during a routine veterinary office visit. Recent amendments to the National Road Traffic Regulations are expected to lead to longer queues at licensing authorities than are strictly necessary.

The changes will impact natural as well as juristic persons (companies, etc.) that seek to register vehicles, renew licence discs, driving licenses, etc.
